چکیده

Substantial quantities of organic carbon (OC) are stored in the thick, ice-rich, and organic-rich sediments called yedoma deposits, distributed in eastern Siberia and Alaska today. Quantifying yedoma carbon stocks during the glacial period is important for understanding how much carbon could have been decomposed during the last deglaciation. Yet processes that yield the formation of thick frozen OC in yedoma deposits are missing in global carbon cycle models. Here we incorporate sedimentation parameterizations into the Organizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE-MICT) land surface model, which leads to reasonable results in OC vertical distribution and regional budgets, compared with site-specific observations and inventories for today’s nondegraded yedoma region. Simulated total soil OC stock for the northern permafrost region during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is 1536–1592 PgC, of which 390–446 PgC is within today’s yedoma region. This result is an underestimation since we did not account for the potentially much larger yedoma area during the LGM than the present day.

Geological controlling soil organic carbon and nitrogen density in a hillslope landscape, semiarid area of Golestan province, Iran

The effects of geological conditionwere assessed on density of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and Nitrogen (N)in a sequence of hillslope landscape, derived from different lithology i.e. loess deposit, reworked loess, marl with mixed siltstone and shale, reddish brown clay deposits and older loess in the semiarid area of northern Iran. However, other factors can influence SOC and N density such as la...

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

The deep permafrost carbon pool of the Yedoma region in Siberia and Alaska

[1] Estimates for circumpolar permafrost organic carbon (OC) storage suggest that this pool contains twice the amount of current atmospheric carbon. The Yedoma region sequestered substantial quantities of OC and is unique because its deep OC, which was incorporated into permafrost during ice age conditions. Rapid inclusion of labile organic matter into permafrost halted decomposition and result...
